We learned last week that DeMarcus Ware would, in all likelihood, be held out of this week’s mandatory veteran mini-camp as he continues recuperating from offseason shoulder surgery. But if there were a game this week, and Ware needed to play, he says he’d be able to.

I feel like if I had to put the pads on today, I’d be fine,” Ware told the NFL Network this weekend, via the Dallas Morning News, “and I’d be ready to play.”

When Ware is finally cleared to return, he’ll do so as a defensive end in a 4-3 system. He has played his entire pro career to this point as an outside linebacker in a 3-4 alignment, but Ware is actually excited about the prospect of moving back to the position he played in college--a spot that, he says, will free him up to make more plays as a pass rusher.

“Going from 3-4 outside linebacker to playing defensive end is actually a little bit easier because you don’t have to worry about a lot of formations in the drops,” Ware said. “So you get more opportunity to rush the passer, so it’s a lot easier, you can be a lot more aggressive because you don’t have to think as much.”
