Walker To Make MMA Debut January 30

The man greatly responsible, albeit indirectly, for the Cowboys' dominant stretch of Super Bowl runs in the early nineties will soon try his hand at mixed martial arts--at the tender age of 47.

Herschel Walker, former Cowboys running back, announced earlier this year that he would step into the cage to fight professionally, beginning in 2010. More precisely, it has been announced, he will debut at the January 30 StrikeForce promotion at the BankAtlantic Center in Sunrise, Florida.

In the promotion's first ever event in the state of Florida, Walker finds himself part of a loaded fight card, along with former UFC superstar Nick Diaz and 145-lb. women's champion Cris Cyborg. (That's not her real name, though we wish it was.)

Walker is a fifth degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do, and has trained extensively in Kenpo and Muay Thai. He recently went through a twelve-week MMA training camp at the American Kickboxing Academy, a world-renowned school that serves as home to, among others, Cung Le.

An opponent for Walker has not yet been named.

Walker, of course, was at the heart of possibly the biggest trade in the history of the NFL. In 1989, he was sent from Dallas to the Minnesota Vikings for five players and six draft picks, many of which would grow into staples of the Dallas Cowboys dynasty of the early part of the nineties.
