Romo Almost Pulled A Chris Webber

Mike Shanahan's timeout call in overtime saved Tony Romo from an embarrassing miscue

Well, this could have been bad.

In the overtime period of the Cowboysโ€™ week 11 victory over the Redskins in Landover, Tony Romo came dangerously close to making a potentially outcome-altering mistake. You see, Dallas had spent their two timeouts already. Romo didnโ€™t know this, and he tried to call a timeout as Dallas set up Dan Baileyโ€™s 39-yard field goal attempt.

Luckily for Dallas, Redskinsโ€™ head coach Mike Shanahan beat Romo to it, and called a timeout in order to ice the kicker, before Romo made the phantom timeout call, the "Chris Webber," if you will.

Had Shanahan not called the timeout, Romo would have been flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct, a 15-yard penalty that would have turned the 39-yard try into a 54-yarder. As it happened, Romo and the Cowboys got lucky, as Shanny got his timeout and Bailey hit the 39-yard attempt to give Dallas the overtime win.

โ€œThe clock was running down, yeah, I tried to stop it at one second,โ€ Romo explained after the game, per ESPN Dallas. โ€œThey helped us out on that.โ€
