On Wednesday night, outside linebacker DeMarcus Ware became the 28th player in NFL history to record 100 sacks, as he got to the Giants' Eli Manning twice. This isn’t that surprising when you think about it--Ware seems to be flirting with the 20-sack mark just about every season these days--but it’s still quite the accomplishment in what is shaping up to look a lot like a Hall of Fame career for Ware.
The milestone is particularly impressive with a little context: Ware recorded his 100th sack in his 113th game in the NFL. Only Reggie White--who is widely regarded as one of, if not the best pass rusher in NFL history--did it faster, at 96 games. And the high regard in which White is held is evident by Ware’s postgame comments alone.
"I always talk about consistency," Ware said, per ESPN Dallas. "Since my rookie season. Being able to try and do the same things every year and get pressure on the quarterback and being in the midst of being named with a guy like Reggie White ... Just to have that opportunity is a great honor."
More important than the milestone to Ware on Wednesday night was that Dallas was able to close out the reigning Super Bowl Champs--something the Cowboys haven’t been able to do much in recent years--on their way to a big week one win and a 1-0 record.
"When it's the fourth quarter and when you're out there and time to get pressure, you have to put the dagger down and be able to close the offense out as a whole, and that's what we were trying to do," Ware said. "That's what we did. It's like, (Eli Manning) has three or four or five minutes left and they got three timeouts. They can still come back and win the game because they've done that before. So can we close the game out? We were just talking about that the whole time (on the sidelines). We were talking about that."
