Barry Church Predicts “Big Leap” for J.J. Wilcox

S J.J. Wilcox will compete for the starting job opposite Barry Church in 2014

Going into his second season in the NFL, J.J. Wilcox is seemingly being groomed as the frontrunner for the starting safety position opposite Barry Church. From what he’s seen over the first week of OTAs, Church believes the Georgia Southern product is ready for the challenge.

“He’s making leaps and bounds,” Church said this week, per the Dallas Morning News. “I feel like he’ll make a big leap in his second year. He’s moving to free safety this year and I feel like he’s going to do a great job at it.”

Wilcox said earlier this week that the team wants him to take on a leadership role in the Cowboys’ secondary and, when the team gathered for the first round of OTAs on Tuesday, he was out there with the first team defense.

“It tells me that I have to be on my game,” Wilcox said. “To know that they have the respect for me to put [me with the first team], I want to show them that it’s going to pay off.”
