It had been a hot rumor for weeks after sightings of G.A. Moore at the Aubrey administration building, but on Thursday night it was a rumor no more, as reported by the Denton Record-Chronicle.
The legendary, sometimes controversial, coach accepted the job at Class 2A Aubrey, northeast of Denton at a rate of $50,000/year for two years. Former head coach Daryl Hellman, an Aubrey graduate, will remain in place as the athletic director as the school is anticipating a possible move up to Class 3A in next year's realignment.
Moore, who turns 70 this year, is the famed former coach at Pilot Point (three different tenures) and Celina (two stops), along with a two-year stop in Sherman. In his second tenure at Celina, he won four straight state titles (five total) and left with a 57-game winning streak.
His overall record is 412-85-9 (an 81 percent winning percentage) and he returns with six Class 2A state titles to his name and two co-state championships at the 2A level. There was also a great documentary made about his Celina program a few years back, that is a must-see for Texas high school football fans.
The controversy Moore brings with him is due to several accusations of recruiting players in his days at Celina, and specifically Pilot Point, but no charges were ever proven against him.
A lot of it could have to do with the fact that that area (Pilot Point-Celina-Aubrey-Prosper, etc.) are seeing heavy population growth, and have been for quite some time. When people want to get away from the hustle and bustle of DFW traffic, why not go somewhere with a legendary high school coach for your son to play for, right?
All I'm saying is, don't be surprised if you see an influx of big, burly offensive linemen making their way up Aubrey way.
