Thanaka, a face mask made from Thanaka tree bark, has been worn by Burmese men and women for centuries.
The mask is made with paste that is ground onto a stone using water. Then, it is safe to apply to the face.
Thanaka doesn’t just serve a purpose as a cleanser. The mask is also used as a sunblock, bug repellent and acne treatment.
Though its popularity in Myanmar is waning, it is now being used as an ingredient in western makeup for its natural quality.
