Houston Zoo Opening New $28 Million Home for Gorillas

A family transplanted to Texas from New York City gets to show off their new $28 million digs for the first time this weekend -- a 4,000-square-foot home on two acres of prime Houston real estate.

The three former Yankees -- 31-year-old Zuri, 25-year-old Holli and their 13-year-old daughter, Sufi -- are western lowland gorillas obtained by the Houston Zoo from the Bronx Zoo.

They're among seven of the endangered primates that now live in a new state-of-the-art indoor and outdoor exhibit at the Houston Zoo.

The zoo's gorilla home project is the culmination of four years of fundraising and construction.

Gorillas have been absent for more than a decade from the Houston Zoo, which drew about 2.3 million visitors in 2014, making it one of the nation's top five.
