Prosecutors say a man has been sentenced to 50 years in prison after attacking two San Antonio police officers who were dispatched to an emergency center to detain him in 2013.
The Bexar County district attorney's office says a judge on Monday sentenced 42-year-old Darryn Burgess. In October, a jury found Burgess guilty of assault on a public servant.
Prosecutors say officers Roberto Aguilar and Yvette Meade went to the emergency center after medical personnel said Burgess represented a danger to himself and others. A doctor had found Burgess to be paranoid and delusional after of ingesting methamphetamine.
Prosecutors say Burgess knocked Meade unconscious and punched Aguilar in the face. When Aguilar pulled his weapon to defend himself, the weapon discharged, striking the officer in the leg.
