Emergency crews responding to a hazardous-materials report at an Austin apartment building found a man dead in an apartment amid signs warning that toxic hydrogen sulfide gas was present in the room.
Five other people, including the property manager at the 21 Pearl apartment complex, were treated for exposure to the deadly gas.
Two people were taken to a hospital for treatment in stable condition.
The complex is situated in the West Campus district near the University of Texas campus in Austin and caters largely to student tenants.
An autopsy has been ordered to determine what caused the death of the man, whom officials estimated was in his 20s.
However, Austin-Travis County EMS Division Chief Eric Jakubauskas said hydrogen sulfide "is not an uncommon method of chemical suicide."
