High School Athletes Stand Against Domestic Violence

Young men encourage adults to take pledge

Football players at Dallas' Adamson High School are pledging to take a stand against domestic violence.

This team started a program last October where they challenged student-athletes to take the pledge.

Adamson High School head football coach Josh Ragsdale said more than 8,000 people signed up. This year, the athletes are now calling on adult men to sign up as well.

For some of these athletes, this isn’t just a discussion about domestic violence — this issue hits home.

“At the time, cause I was pretty young, it was a pretty frightening thing,” said Joshua Derrough, a senior football player. “But once you grow older you just learn from it, you know? You just learn from it.”

Ragsdale said they planned on doing the domestic violence pledge again this year, but with recent events involving domestic violence, like the Ray Rice situation, it’s even more timely for his players.

“It's kind of hit at home to them that, ‘Wow, this is the team I follow,’” Ragsdale said. “And it’s kind of opened up their eyes to what they value in an athlete and what they see in an athlete — and what they accept and what they don’t accept.”
