Copeville Community Rallies to Help Tornado Victims

Cleanup in Copeville has come a long way since an EF2 tornado ripped part of the community apart, but there's still a lot of work ahead.

Two people died and at least a half-dozen homes and businesses were destroyed when an EF-2 tornado touched down along Texas 78.

Karrissa Edwards said she left the salon she owns 45 minutes before it was leveled.

"It was devastating," she said. "It's crazy that I was here 45 minutes prior and just in a matter of seconds, poof, it was all gone."

Collin County doesn't have a rural trash pickup service in place and cannot clear debris on private land, so officials have been working with local volunteers and businesses who have pitched in to haul large piles of debris to the landfill for free.

Crews were out Wednesday night trying to restore electricity to homes that have been in the dark since Dec. 26.

Volunteers will be back in Copeville Thursday for another day of cleanup.
