Austin Man Gets 60 Years in Condo Killing

An Austin man has been sentenced to 60 years in prison for bludgeoning a man and slitting his throat in a downtown condo.

Twenty-seven-year-old Matthew Bacon took a plea deal with prosecutors on Wednesday and pleaded guilty to murder. He had originally been charged with capital murder in the July 2013 killing of 26-year-old David Villarreal, which is punishable by the death penalty or life in prison without parole.

Bacon told police he met Villarreal at a downtown bar and decided to kill him in order to steal his iPhone, iPad, Xbox and other belongings. He used a hammer to hit Villarreal over the head before he cut his throat with a kitchen knife in Villarreal's condo.

Police in Louisiana arrested Bacon two days after the slaying.
