Texas State Parks Draw New Year's Hikers, Visitors

Texas Parks & Wildlife Department officials expect hundreds of New Year's Day hikers at state parks as a healthy way to start the new year.

Department authorities on Monday announced the growing interest in so-called First Day Hikes.

Agency officials say more than 1,500 people took part in 2014 New Year's Day hikes at the 59 state parks.

Some parks this time around are advertising New Year's Day yoga and a chance to run with rangers on certain stretches of trail.

Various trails range from short, flat nature areas to more challenging hikes such as Lighthouse Trail at Palo Duro Canyon State Park in the Texas Panhandle. Department officials also suggest the Peak Fitness Challenge at Franklin Mountains State Park in El Paso.
