Father-Son Argument Ends in Gunfire

Father arrested on suspicion of aggravated assault

A heated argument between a father and son in Ellis County turned violent Thursday afternoon.

The sheriff's office received a call at about 3 p.m. from the son, who said he had been shot by his father. He had run out of their house on Bigham Road and into the woods to make the call on his cellphone.

Deputies arrived and found that the father had been beaten. The father told investigators his son attacked him, and that's when he pulled out a small-caliber handgun and shot his son twice. One bullet hit his buttocks, the other grazed his chest and went through his arm, according to police.

When first responders arrived, the son was still conscious, alert and talking. He was airlifted to Parkland Hospital in Dallas. Investigators have not released the men's names or conditions.

Deputies took the father to the sheriff's office for questioning.  Hewas later arrested on suspicion of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

Lt. James Saulter said he does not recall any other incidents at the home that police have had to respond to.

Saulter said the father had another son who lived with them but was not home at the time of the dispute.
