Cornyn: Stimulus Package Will Pass

Senator says measure is "just spending as far as the eye can see"

Republican Sen. John Cornyn said he fully expects President Barack Obama's stimulus package to pass the Senate, but he warned it could damage the U.S. economy in the future.

A stark critic of Obama's approach to righting the badly damaged economy, Cornyn said he believes passage of the $800-plus billion measure with minimal Republican support must be a major disappointment to Obama. The new president has vowed to take the debilitating partisan heat out of Washington politics.

Cornyn argued that the Obama stimulus package is loaded down with pet Democratic spending packages and is "just spending as far as the eye can see."

Cornyn spoke on the TV show "Fox News Sunday."

Texas agencies are looking for ways to spend money once the package is finalized. The state could receive up to $270 million for clean water development, $2.4 billion for road and bridge repair, $1.2 billion for low-performing schools and $104 million for homeless prevention programs.

Congress would require states to spend the money within two years.
