President Donald Trump's attempt on Monday to describe a broader strategy for Afghanistan was a welcome step. He made clear that his long-time "Get out!" stance is not tenable in the current environment, calling instead for increasing U.S. troop deployments while simultaneously putting more conditions on the Afghan government. He is smart to recognize that his pledge as a candidate to simply bolt from Afghanistan would likely create a vacuum which radical jihadists could use to bomb and behead their way back into tyrannical power.
