9/15: Out Of The Norm

Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, play a bit of 'Family Feud' and see a hometown comedian work his magic

AUTHOR EXTRAORDINAIRRE: As today marks the kick-off for National Hispanic Heritage Month, the Office of Student Life at Mountain View College welcomes author Laura Esquivel. She rose to literary fame with her first novel, "Como agua para chocolate (Like Water for Chocolate)" released in 1989 and has since been translated into 23 languages and developed into an award-winning film. Her most recent book was in 2006 entitled "Malinche," which celebrates Mexican history. Esquivel’s writing combines the supernatural with everyday life. Tonight the free lecture event will be held at Performance Hall from 11 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. and again at 7 p.m. Get in line for a reception and book signing right after the second lecture starting at 8:30 p.m.

SURVEY SAYS: Put your game face on. Take no prisoners. Tonight will be a night of victory – a game night victory. Round up the troops, choose a team captain, and head over to Brooklyn Jazz Café in Dallas for a mid-week game show “face off.” ‘Family Feud’ will be in full effect this evening and may or may not include prizes (definitely no high bankrolls). The café is putting a twist on the television game show, but we’re pretty sure the survey says no one can play for $10,000 at this family game night. Get over this hump-day Wednesday and play ‘Family Feud’ with Eric Willis and Friends from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. tonight and every Wednesday.

HOMETOWN LAUGHS: Paul Varghese may not have won season two of Last Comic Standing, but he is a Dallas native, so he was a winner before he even set foot on that reality show. He was named the 2009 “Funniest Comic in Dallas" -- a fact we were reminded of when we caught up with him this summer. The UNT alum will put his funny to the test as he takes the stand-up stage tonight at the Addison Improv at 8 p.m.
