With the gallery seeing stars after Wednesday’s Celebrity Challenge, it doesn’t seem to matter that there won’t be a Tiger sighting this week. “We would have loved to see him for sure, but I didn’t anticipate to see him so I’m not that disappointed,” says Lena Gutierrez of Millbrae.
Tiger or not, for the celebrities, the real draw is the scenery. “I mean look at it, it’s amazing,” says actor Don Cheadle, adding, “it’s beautiful and we’re playing for our charities which is the important thing obviously.”
Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo agrees. “There’s only a few courses like this, where you know you’ll get a special place and environment, that’s really what stands out here,” he says.
ESPN’s Chris Berman considers history when thinking of why the course is the star for this tournament. “It’s played at Pebble Beach where Tom Watson, Jack Nicklaus, etcetera, etcetera have won U.S. Opens,” says Berman, adding, “you’ve got it all here, you’ve got friendship and also you’ve got as much history in the U.S. for golf as anywhere.”
So history and scenery aside, when do the folks that travel with the PGA Tour think Woods will return? “No one knows and there’s a possibility that even Tiger doesn’t know at this point,” says Golf Channel announcer Kelly Tilghman, adding, “the bottom line is he’ll come back when he’s ready, and that’s all up to him.”
