Congressman Reflects on Justice Scalia's Legacy

On a night North Texas Congressman Pete Sessions was campaigning door to door in Richardson, he took a moment to reflect on Justice Antonin Scalia's legacy.

"He is a man who has left his mark and the country will miss him greatly," Sessions said.

"This was the most conservative member of the court. This was the person who was the linchpin behind the writing of the ideas that moved and shaped law."

Scalia led the court in expanding the rights of defendants to confront their accusers in court and limiting a judge's power to use evidence in sentencing unless it was proved during a trial.

Scalia also wrote the ruling that said the Second Amendment guarantees an individual's right to own a firearm.

"This is a real blow. Even though he served on the court since 1986, you realize his writings will live on forever," Sessions said.

"For years, Justice Scalia has been the linchpin of writing articles, decisions and the though content behind the law as it relates to conservative principles and ideas."
