More than a dozen children were hospitalized Tuesday after two school buses crashed into each other Tuesday morning on the way to summer classes.
The crash took place at about 9 a.m. near Royal Lane and Skillman Street in northeast Dallas when one school bus rear-ended the other. According to the driver, the brakes on the bus failed, causing the crash.
In all, 17 students were transported to area hospitals. None of the injuries are believed to be life-threatening and most students were transported as a precaution. Neither of the bus drivers were injured in the crash.
"There weren't very many serious injuries. A lot of the transports occurred because a lot of the students obviously are minors. At that point we don't leave anything up to interpretation. If they say they have an injury, they get transported," said Jason Evans, with Dallas Fire-Rescue.
One of the students told NBC 5's KeatonFox that the collision caused quite a jolt, but not enough to throw her from her seat.
All of the students were in grades 7 through 11 in the Richardson Independent School District.
Tom Clark, with the Richardson ISD, said the buses are operated by Dallas County and were hauling students to Lake Highlands Junior High School and Lake Highlands High School.

Students that were not injured in the crash were put on other buses and transported to summer school.
The cause of the crash is under investigation. Police have not said if any charges would be filed.
