A man with a history of mental illness who allegedly threatened to torture and kill a random woman near Texas Christian University last month has been arrested and charged with breaking into a building near the University of North Texas Health Science Center.
Daniel Staley, 24, was a the subject of a campus crime alert last week at TCU after police said he contacted a crisis hotline and said he was near the Fort Worth campus and planned to kill a woman with a hammer and cut up her body.
He underwent a mental health exam but was later released.
According to the police report, UNT HSC police were called to the 1400 block of May Street for a report of shattered glass. The investigating officer said he checked video cameras on the property and saw Staley leaving the building through a shattered glass door and that he was carrying a brown bag.
A UNT HSC staff member's husband followed Staley into a nearby gas station, and told the officer where to find him, according to the police report. The officer said in the report that he arrested Staley outside a nearby QuikTrip at Grainger St. and W. Rosedale St., and that Staley admitted to breaking into the building and that he was "messed up."
The police officer said inside the brown bag he found a security card reader stolen from the UNT HSC building.
Tarrant County’s jail website said Staley was held on $2,000 bond on a charge of burglary.

Staley has a long history of being in and out of mental hospitals, his family told The Dallas Morning News.
In 2010, Staley dug up a corpse at a Pleasant Grove cemetery, cut off the foot, and then presented it to a police officer. He was found not guilty by reason of insanity.
