Bedford police said the shooting happened at the Kroger in the 2100 block of Harwood Road just after 5 p.m.

The victim — later identified as 28-year-old Sam Phillip Smith, of Haltom City — was talking to another man about a door ding in the man's vehicle.

Police said the discussion "deteriorated" and both men told each other they were armed.

Police said the man, who was sitting in his vehicle, told them Smith was standing outside his vehicle and reached behind his back. The man, who has a handgun license, thought Smith was reaching for a gun and shot him.

Smith was not armed, according to police.

Authorities said Smith was transported to John Peter Smith Hospital in critical condition. He was later pronounced deceased at the hospital.

Bedford police said they arrested the man at the scene on suspicion of murder. He was released from jail Tuesday, pending further investigation of probable cause.
