Staying Safe During Active Shooter Situation

As mass shootings continue to make headlines across the country, the City of Dallas has issued a reminder Saturday of how to properly handle active shooter incidents.

The Dallas Office of Emergency Management tweeted the instructional video produced by the City of Houston and published the guide on its homepage.

If you ever find yourself in an active shooter situation, the FBI recommends:

  • Run - Immediately evacuate the area
  • Hide - Find a safe place where you can hide and block the shooter from entering
  • Fight - As a last resort, you can make the choice to attack and incapacitate the shooter

If you report an active shooter, The Department of Homeland Security recommends to:

  • Report the location of the active shooter
  • Report the number of shooters
  • Try to give a physical description of the shooter
  • Give authorities a head count of how many people are at the location

When first responders arrive on the scene:

  • Remain calm and follow instructions
  • Raise hands and spread your fingers, keeping them visible at all times
  • Avoid quick movements toward officers, such as holding onto them for safety
  • Avoid pointing, screaming or yelling
