Fort Worth Officer Drowns in Oklahoma Accident: Police Association

A Fort Worth Police Department employee was involved in a scuba diving accident Friday in Oklahoma, the department said.

In a message posted to its Facebook page, the Fort Worth Police Officers Association said a veteran officer drowned in Lake Murray near Ardmore.

In a message posted its Facebook page Saturday, the Fort Worth POA confirmed the officer's identity:

"We are heartbroken and saddened from the loss of a fellow officer and dear friend to many. Officer Harlan Tray Whitworth #3330 will forever be remembered in our heart as a great man and outstanding police officer. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family as they cope with a tremendous loss. We will miss you Tray!"

The Star-Telegram reports Whitworth and three others were scuba diving at Lake Murray Steel Tower when he got separated from his diving gear.

Whitworth's diving gear surfaced but he did not, according to the Star-Telegram. Whitworth's body was recovered Friday afternoon.

Fort Worth police spokesman Daniel Segura confirmed Whitworth was commissioned with the department in July 2002.
