Dallas Man Prays for Family in Haiti as Hurricane Matthew Approaches

Lougho Dorsainvil moved to Dallas more than 20 years ago, but his heart – and much of his family – will always be in Haiti.

As the island nation braced for Hurricane Matthew Monday night, Dorsainvil went to the only place he could think to go: church.

He prayed for his 76-year-old mother, his sister and brothers, aunts, uncles and cousins. He said he told them to get to safety, knowing in the back of his head there is no safe place for them to go.

"No place to go and nowhere to hide, just have to take what comes and do the best you can," he said.

The National Hurricane Center listed winds at 140 miles per hour as of 9 p.m. Monday evening, with "life-threatening rain, wind and storm surge expected in parts of Haiti." Some parts of the island are expected to get up to 40 inches of rain.

The center of the storm was expected to pass just east of Jamaica and near or over the southwestern tip of Haiti early Tuesday before heading to eastern Cuba, the NHC said.

Dorsainvil said his sister told him the water is rising and the wind is getting stronger.

"When I go home tonight, and go to sleep, there's not going to be any sleep. I will just wait to see," Dorsainvil said.
