More than a dozen brands of peanut butter and almond butter produced by Sunland, Inc., have been voluntarily recalled across the country after a salmonella outbreak left 29 people sick in 18 states. The recall initially impacted only Creamy Salted Valencia Peanut Butter at Trader Joe's grocery store, but now includes all peanut butters produced by Sunland.
“This expanded recall affects a far greater number of brands than earlier believed, and it’s important that consumers, school cafeterias, restaurants, hospitals and other food preparation sites check their cabinets for these recalled items,” Consumer Protection Commissioner William M. Rubenstein said in a statement. “Anyone who has any of the recalled nut butters should not eat them, but return them to the store where purchased for a full refund. The Department will work to oversee and ensure compliance with this recall.”
According to the FDA, all peanut butter manufactured between May 1 and Sept. 24 by Sunland could be contaminated with salmonella, an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and those with weakened immune systems.
Three of the peanut butters are sold at Trader Joe's. The chain posted on its website that the products have been removed from its store shelves and destroyed.
Twenty nine cases of salmonella in 18 states have been linked to the peanut butter, according to the FDA. Other states reporting illness include Massachusetts, New York, Rhode Island, New Jersey, Washington, California, Arizona, Texas, Louisiana, Missouri, Illinois, Minnesota, Michigan, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Virginia, and Maryland, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The products were distributed nationally to numerous large supermarket chains.
