Drafting Top QB Sounds Good, But Not Right Move

The Dallas Cowboys are in a rare position this offseason.

They're a good team with a lot of talent that had an awful year, thanks in large part but not completely to a rash of injuries to its two most important offensive players.

Now, they find themselves with the No. 4 overall pick in April's draft similar to the way the San Antonio Spurs built their dynasty by losing David Robinson to injury, tanking and then drafting Tim Duncan the next year. We all know what happened after that.

The Cowboys are also riding out the twilight of franchise quarterback Tony Romo's career, and he only played in four games in 2015 after breaking his collarbone not once, but twice. Oh, and there are a few highly touted quarterbacks coming out in this year's draft, including the darling of the draft prep season, Jared Goff, and the darling of the Senior Bowl, Carson Wentz.

There has been and will be much more debate of whether the Cowboys draft one to eventually replace Romo, ala Aaron Rodgers in Green Bay, and I've gone back and forth on it, but the final call is that would be a bad decision.

Here's why: The Cowboys have a chance to be very good again next season, two years removed from a 12-4 campaign that very easily could've seen them in the NFC Championship Game if not for an awful rule.

They have several areas on the roster to upgrade, and while getting a future franchise quarterback would be fantastic, it wouldn't help them for what the Cowboys hope is another 3-5 years. They have a chance to grab a true impact starter that high in the draft, whether it be a wide receiver to stick opposite Dez Bryant or a shutdown corner or pass-rushing beast.

If the Cowboys had no holes, or even just one, then they might serve themselves well by taking advantage of the rare high pick to grab a quarterback, but that's just not the case with this team, and they shouldn't go that route.
