Jerry Knows Playoff Expansion Could Help Cowboys

Jerry Jones has been a longtime supporter of playoff expansion

If you’re one of those cynics who believes Jerry Jones is in favor of expanding the playoffs so his perennially middling team will have a better shot at the postseason, well, you might be right.

Jones has been in favor of expansion for as long as the proposal has been out there, but this week at the Spring Owner’s Meetings in Atlanta, he admitted that he has considered how a larger field would benefit the Cowboys--who have finished a win away from a playoff berth in each of the last three seasons. So yeah, it’s only natural that he’s a fan of the idea.

I am pleased that we’re looking at expanding the playoffs,” Jones told the NFL Network this week, via the Dallas Morning News. “I think what a playoff means to a team and to a city is unquestioned. Now, from the Cowboys standpoint, maybe it will give us a better chance to be in the playoffs, so I’m an easy vote on this one.

“Seriously, I think it really enhances what we’re always trying to do, and that’s fan interest. Any time, at such a critical time for teams to be able to show their fans that they’re doing the kinds of things that maybe gives you a chance for a Super Bowl, that’s going in the right direction.”

Playoff expansion is one of the main topics on the table at this round of meetings, but it's unlikely that a vote will come down before the 2014 season.
