Cowboys defensive end Anthony Spencer believes the Dallas Cowboys defense, widely predicted to be one of the worst in the league in 2014, could jump up and surprise some folks this season.
The Cowboys are coming off the worst defensive season in franchise history from a statistical standpoint, and since then, they cut DeMarcus Ware and lost Jason Hatcher in free agency. Orlando Scandrick was suspended for the first four games of the season for violating the league’s substance abuse policy.
In fact, the only reason for optimism we’ve really heard came from Jerry Jones, who reasons that the defense will be better because they can’t possibly be as bad as they were in 2013--not the most scientific reasoning we’ve ever come across.
“I think we’re going to surprise a lot of people,” Spencer told the team’s official website. “That’s what I believe. I believe that this defense is going to surprise a lot of people in the things that we’re going to be able to do and that we are going to do. I’m looking forward to getting back out there and being a part of this defense.”
Spencer is off the PUP list, but it’ll still be another few weeks before he returns to full-time practice from microfracture surgery.
