Tom Thumb Pulls Plug on Pump Rewards

Tom Thumb customers will no longer receive fuel rewards with purchases as Safeway Inc. pulls the plug on its PowerPump program.

The reward program launched last year and offered a 10-cent per-gallon discount at Tom Thumb gas stations for every $100 spent inside the store.

While the program was originally set to continue through Jan. 2, customers who have rewards built up have until midnight Saturday to redeem the discount, the Dallas Morning News reported

A Safeway spokesperson told the paper that the cancellation has nothing to do with a lawsuit filed in June by Irving-based Excentus Corp.

Excentus accuses Safeway of patent infringement and stealing trade secrets, the paper reported. Excentus said it opened up its operation for review after Safeway made a bid to purchase it three years ago, but Safeway backed out and launched its own program.
