Police Public Memorial to Be Permanently Removed Sunday

After being ushered inside Friday morning due to thunderstorms, the public memorial to Dallas' five fallen officers will be permanently removed Sunday.

"The members of the Dallas Police Department are thankful for the  citizens of Dallas and fellow law enforcement officers from around the world who came to the Jack Evans Police Headquarters to build the memorial in support of the officers. Words cannot express the abundance of gratitude and love felt throughout the department," the city said in a news release.

In the days since four city police officers and one transit officer were ambushed and gunned down following a peaceful protest against police violence, the memorial has continued to grow.

Much of the memorial was quickly gathered up and moved indoors by librarians and archivists as storms rolled in Friday morning.

Once the memorial is permanently removed from outside police headquarters, the messages, patches and other memorabilia will be preserved in the library's History and Archives collection.
