West Lake Park usually opens on April 1, but the Army Corps most popular park on Lake Lewisville probably won’t be ready for visitors thanks to damage from recent floods.
Lakegoers may want to check ahead before heading to their favorite North Texas park this spring.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers reports some of its parks on local lakes are still being cleaned up from last spring's massive floods.
Westlake Park in Hickory Creek – one of the Corps' most popular parks on Lewisville Lake – never opened after flood waters took over and shuttered the gates last May.
Park ranger John Mathney said volunteers have been living at the park since then to fix things up and get back open.
The park is scheduled to open April 1 but will almost certainly not be ready, Mathney said.
Among the cleanup needed in the park was the partial rebuild of a bathroom where a wall completely caved in under the weight of the water. Thanks to the volunteers, though, that and other buildings have been repaired.
Also damaged were the roofs of picnic areas, several trees and signs, and many of the grills in the park area, which Mathney points out were just replaced last spring before the floods.

The latest news from around North Texas.
Volunteers are aiming for an early- to mid-May partial opening at Westlake, which would allow people to at least enjoy the popular lake front and Party Cove areas. It's unclear though when the park will be back to 100-percent.
