Error Results in Galveston Customers Being Overcharged $3.5M

Galveston officials say a clerical error resulted in water and sewer customers being overcharged by $3.5 million over the course of nearly three years.

The city has been charging a higher rate for water and sewer than what the city council approved in a 2012 vote.

The mistake affects more than 23,600 customers.

City Manager Brian Maxwell told The Galveston County Daily News that the council at the time was considering a higher rate but then ultimately adopted a lower one. But when city staff updated the billing system with the new figure, the higher rate was mistakenly chosen.

Customers will receive refunds in the form of credit on future bills.
