Streetsweeper Killed in Crash With Mustangs

A crash between two Ford Mustangs and a streetsweeper killed one person and injured several others in McKinney early Monday.

The collision happened at about 2 a.m. on the 4300 block of South Lake Forest Drive.  Both mustangs, going southbound, struck the streetsweeper as it turned into a Wal-Mart parking lot from northbound South Lake Forest Drive.

According to witnesses, the drivers of the mustangs were racing from a nearby traffic light.  They reported hearing squealing tires, engines revving and then the crash.  When the cars struck the streetsweeper, it flipped over before coming to rest upside down on a small embankment.

Two of the three occupants of the streetsweeper were trapped inside until rescue personnel were able to free them. One of the rescued men was transported by air ambulance to Metroplex Hospital.  The third occupant, a 31-year-old Hispanic man, was killed at the scene.

The driver of the blue 1999 Ford Mustang was transported to Parkland Hospital by air ambulance.  The driver of the gray 2003 Ford Mustang was transported by ground to MCM Hospital.  Their conditions are not known.

Sgt. Kirby Luke, with the McKinney Police Department, added that alcohol may have been a factor in the crash as cans of beer were found at the crash site.
