3 Houston-Area Villages Consider Cameras to Check Vehicles

Three upscale Houston-area villages could rely on cameras to electronically track vehicles to help protect the communities.

The Houston Chronicle reports Bunker Hill, Piney Point and Hunters Creek Village officials Tuesday night announced the start of a $49,000 feasibility study. Results are expected in May.

Officials say the tentative plan is to deploy 30 cameras along certain streets. The technology, similar to what's used in nearby Sugar Land, would note the license plate of every vehicle crossing the city limits and notify police if the plate was linked to a crime.

The three cities jointly operate the Memorial Villages Police Department. Assistant Chief Ray Schultz estimates most crimes are committed by people from outside the area.

The Chronicle reports unofficial estimates put the system cost at up to $1 million.
