The Big Dance

Saturday, June 1

NBC 5 invites you to kick off the summer with Dallas Black Dance Theatre at their new annual fundraiser, The BIG Dance, on Saturday, June 1, at 7:00 p.m. until 2:00 a.m. at the Dee & Charles Wyly Theatre in the Dallas Arts District. Celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Harlem Renaissance with the event’s inaugural theme “Harlem Renaissance in the Roaring 20s.” Featuring more than five bands playing festive music from the 1920s and 30s along with contemporary favorites, The BIG Dance has something for everyone!

In addition to live music on multiple levels, this evening soiree features dance lessons, professional dance vignettes, an outdoor cigar bar, and competitive dance-offs. Patrons are free to explore the five floors of the Wyly Theatre throughout the evening for non-stop entertainment, cuisine choices, signature cocktails, and dancing.

Dallas Black Dance Theatre will transport revellers back in time to the Harlem Renaissance in the Roaring 20s. Occurring in tandem with the Jazz Age, this rich period of creative expression in African American culture created some of the most celebrated artists of American history, including Langston Hughes, Duke Ellington, Billie Holiday, and Aaron Douglas. The BIG Dance pays tribute to this singular era by naming and decorating each floor of the event after an artist.

Hailing from Atlanta, Big Swing & The Ballroom Blasters headlines the event with multiple local bands, like the Texas Gypsies and La Pompe, playing simultaneously on other levels. Over five bands will play a mix of swing music, jazz, standards, and contemporary hits. The evening will close with a live deejay mixing electro swing music with house and top 40 songs to create a speakeasy club for modern times.

Patrons are encouraged to dress in period attire, but any festive cocktail wardrobe is welcome. Pearls, feathers, sequins, headbands, and fringe are easy ways for gals to make an outfit look in the 20s. Pinstripes, vests, suspenders, and fedoras are quick ways for guys to fit right in with Prohibition Harlem.
