Dallas ISD Students Participate in MLK, Jr. Oratory Competition

Students from across the Dallas Independent School District participated in the 24th Annual Gardere MLK Jr. Oratory Competition at the Majestic Theatre on Friday.

Approximately 135 students participated in the in-school competitions held in October to qualify for 15 positions to represent their school in the semi-final round.

Then, eight finalists were selected to advance.

At all three levels of competition, students were judged on their delivery, stage presence, content interpretation and memorization.

Finalists received monetary gifts in varying amounts.

Each student was asked to incorporate ideals from Dr. Kingโ€™s writings and speeches.

The eight finalists presented original speeches to a full crowd addressing the topic: โ€œWhat would Dr. King say in his campaign speech if he were running for president this year?โ€

Lyriq Turner from the Charles Rice Learning Center was the ultimate winner.

The annual competition is presented, hosted and sponsored by Gardere Wynne Sewell LLP.
