Dave Campbell's State Champ Predictions

Heralded magazine throws out predictions for 2009 state championships

After getting back from my weeklong excursion to Boston and Cape Cod, one of the first things I did was take a gander of the new Dave Campbell's Texas Football, which hit newsstands Monday.

In Friday's article, I threw out my predictions for what teams the magazine would pick for its preseason favorites in each classification, and after seeing the magazine, I was hit-or-miss.

In Class 5A Division I, the magazine has Dallas Skyline beating San Antonio Madison in the title game, with Allen and Fort Bend Hightower also capturing region titles.

In 5A Division II, they have Ben Malena and Cedar Hill returning to the top and knocking off defending champion Katy with Lufkin and Smithson Valley checking in as the other regional champions.

In 4A Division I, the magazine likes Longview, which returns a load of talent after a loss in the final game to Lake Travis last year. They also have the Lobos beating upstart Denton Guyer for a second straight year in the state semifinal. They have Longview beating Cibolo Steele in the state championship game and Huntsville as the other regional champion.

In Division II, a youthful Denison squad leads the way behind running back D.J. Jones and quarterback Jordan Taylor. The Yellow Jackets are picked to beat Angleton in the title game with Lake Dallas and Schertz Clemens picked as the other regional champs.

Check back later on for predictions in the lower classifications.
