The Dallas Cowboys have made it official with left tackle Tyron Smith, exercising his fifth year option on Thursday. The move will keep Smith in Dallas through 2015, and allow the Cowboys some breathing room as they get started on trying to get a long-term deal in place.
“He’s the best tackle in the league, in my opinion, and more importantly in other defensive linemen’s opinions and other offensive line coaches’ opinions,” said Smith’s agent, Joe Panos, per ESPN Dallas. “He’s blessed and just wants to have a better year this year. He wants to get to the playoffs. That’s his goal. He wants to win.”
The Cowboys’ ninth overall pick out of USC in 2011, Smith spent his first season in the league at right tackle before moving to Tony Romo’s blind side in 2012. He had a banner year in 2013, earning his first career Pro Bowl nod, and he’s still only 23 years old.
