Winter Weather Misses Major Parts of North Texas

A dynamic winter storm brought widespread rain and even some thunder to the Dallas-Fort Worth area Thursday morning and will persist for much of the day.

NBC 5 Meteorologist Grant Johnston says temperatures will stay above freezing for the remainder of the day, which will keep precipitation in the form of rain for DFW. Much of the rain will begin tapering off as we head into the afternoon hours Thursday.

Farther west and northwest, where it's been cold enough for frozen precipitation, there is still a brief window for snow or sleet, but it's closing fast. Snow accumulation will be limited to areas closer to Wichita Falls and north into Oklahoma.

A Winter Storm Warning remains in effect through Friday morning for a an area that includes the area around Wichita Falls, southwestern Oklahoma and central Oklahoma. The Winter Weather Advisory is in effect until 6 a.m. Friday for counties to the north and northwest of DFW. Go here for a full list of the counties under the Winter Weather Advisory.

Road departments in both Texas and Oklahoma say travel will be dangerous Thursday, including the stretch of Interstate 35 from Oklahoma City to Dallas and along Interstate 40 in the Oklahoma City area.

The storm brought freezing rain to North Texas Wednesday morning, with ice causing problems on some area roads and overpasses.

Traffic Impact

Freezing rain made travel difficult Wednesday as light icing accumulated on some elevated surfaces.

The Fort Worth Office of Emergency Management reported at about 9:30 a.m. Wednesday that westbound NW Loop 820 to northbound Interstate 35W and southbound I-35W was closed. Northbound and southbound I-35W were closed at NE Loop 820 due to some ice on elevated roadways and bridges. Those ramps were reopened at about 12:30 p.m., police said.

On Wednesday, Fort Worth police have asked drivers to take caution near U.S. Highway 287 and Avondate where a five-vehicle crash was reported due to ice. Other crashes due to weather were reported on the 2600 block of Loop 820 and I-35W; westbound I-20 at Chisholm Trail Parkway; ice was found at Interstate 30 and Linkcrest.

In Denton, north Loop 288 bridge at Interstate 35 reopened at about 10:30 a.m. Wednesday after being sanded by TxDOT trucks. Drivers are asked to continue to use caution in the area.

In Weatherford, NBC 5's Tim Ciesco reported Wednesday morning that police responded to five crashes in near freezing temperatures and that the roads were soaked.

After one day of winter weather caused backups on roads across North Texas, crews are preparing for Day 2 of wet weather and slick roads.
At 11 a.m., temperatures in Weatherford remained at freezing leading to problems on roadways.

Drivers are encouraged to travel at slower speeds, relevant to current weather conditions.

There's a chance for wintry precipitation to freeze on North Texas roads Wednesday and Thursday, so TxDOT road crews are putting down brine to prevent bridges and overpasses from icing over.
Power Outages

According to Oncor, the majority of power outages Thursday morning were reported in Dallas County, where about 279 customers were without power as of 9:15 a.m. Power was expected to be restored by 2 p.m., according to Oncor.
