DART Tests First Stretch of Green Line

The new light rail route is set to open on time and on budget

The first major test for the first stretch of DART's new green line went off without a hitch on Monday.

Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) is set to open the first three miles of the new light rail in mid-September. It will stretch from Pearl Street on the east side of downtown Dallas to Deep Ellum, Fair Park, Baylor Medical Center and MLK Jr., stations.

DART hopes the new rail service will double its light rail ridership.

"This really makes it so simple to open up an entire region as we start to allow people good transportation choices to cross boundaries that they may have come up with in their mind," said Gary Thomas, President and Executive Director of DART.

The remaining 25 miles of that rail line should open in December of 2010.
