The Nightcaps, Now Down to a Single Original Member, Were Dallas' First Great Rock Band

It's a story I've told countless times over the past 25 years, and will no doubt tell until it slips from memory. And I only tell it now, again, because one of the men at the center of this tale -- this consequential footnote, immortalized on scratched 7-inch singles and in decades-old legal documents -- has died. That man's name is Gene Haufler. He was a musician who played with some famous people, among them Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons. But since 1958 until his death this month at 76, he was the rhythm guitar player in a band called The Nightcaps, maybe Dallas' most influential band if not one of its most forgotten.  Continue reading...
