Cowboys Must Add Veteran QB Like RGIII

The Dallas Cowboys have neglected the quarterback position during the last few off-seasons, but Troy Aikman thinks that will change this year.

The former Cowboys quarterback told SI.com he thinks owner Jerry Jones will address the position with a former Texas college quarterback likely to be released or traded.

"I believe, as i sit here today, either Johnny Manziel or Robert Griffin III will be in Dallas as a backup," he said.

While Manziel probably isn't the right option, Griffin makes a lot of sense as the team's backup. He flashed top-notch ability at times and he's still young enough that he could improve. 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick — who could be available for as little as a Day 2 draft pick — also fits the description.

Adding a high-upside, low-cost veteran quarterback would also allow the Cowboys to focus their early draft picks in other areas. They're in win-now mode with about a two-year window before Romo is gone. They need to draft players that will make an impact now, not players they hope don't see the field for two years.

The disastrous 2015 season showed the Cowboys they need to add a quarterback with the ability to be an integral piece of a playoff-caliber roster. They have to assume Romo will miss time due to injury and they can't let that ruin their season again. Griffin and Kaepernick are likely the best options.
