Cowboys Looking For QB Help?

Backup QB Jon Kitna is currently dealing with a back injury

Perhaps lost in the Cowboys’ four-game win streak is that backup quarterback Jon Kitna is dealing with a nagging back injury that is at least serious enough for the Cowboys to reportedly put in a waiver claim for Kyle Orton, who was recently released by the Denver Broncos.

Of course, Dallas--reportedly one of three teams, along with the Bears and Chiefs to try to land Orton following his departure from the Mile High City--didn’t land the veteran. Instead he went to Kansas City. But if Kitna’s back doesn’t improve quickly, there’s a chance, according to multiple sources, that the team will continue to look for a quarterback.

"We were probably trying to make sure we didn’t have a guessing game here at backup quarterback relative to Kitna," Jerry Jones said last week on 105.3 The Fan, via ESPN Dallas. "I don’t know on Kitna. We just have to see how that goes."

Which is to say, if Kitna heads to the injured reserve, which seems a possibility at this point, Dallas will look for a quarterback not named Stephen McGee, technically the team’s no. 3 QB, who has been backing up Tony Romo since the injury to Kitna. One possibility is Rudy Carpenter, a former Cowboy who is currently on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ practice squad.

We’ll let you know more as we have it.
