As hard as it may be to believe today, in 2006, as a free agent with a banged up shoulder, Drew Brees drew interest from only two teams: the Miami Dolphins and the New Orleans Saints. Obviously, Brees found a home in New Orleans, and the rest is history.
But one of the more alluring aspects of Miami, Brees said in a conference call with the Dallas media recently, was Jason Garrett, who then served as the quarterbacks coach for the Dolphins. Brees, who grew up watching the Cowboys, remembers Garrett, from his visits with Miami that offseason, as an adroit football mind, particularly where the quarterback position is concerned.
“One of the things I really liked about Miami was Jason Garrett," Brees said, per ESPN Dallas. "First of all, he played the quarterback position in the NFL. I think that any time you have a guy that’s played this position at the highest level, they just get it. They understand what you’re thinking and what you’re feeling and what you’re seeing and all that stuff, so that helps.
“Also, I just think he seemed like a guy who was very much focused on the fundamentals of playing the quarterback position and preparation and what goes into it from a mental standpoint. He just seemed like the kind of guy who would help you become a much better player.”
