Some Starters Will Play Thursday

Wade Phillips said Tuesday that some starters will play Thursday night in the preseason finale, but this group will not include starting quarterback Tony Romo. Third-stringer Stephen McGee will start under center and play most of the game; others ruled out for Thursday night include LB Keith Brooking, DE Marcus Spears and SS Gerald Sensabaugh.

“We are not going to play our starters overall very much, if any,” Phillips said. “In a few cases, [starters] will play some, but we will play a lot of guys in this ballgame that I think will make a difference on our team this year and also guys that are on the border of making or not making the football team.”

Meanwhile, Phillips said that rookie receiver Dez Bryant’s status for Thursday would be largely dependent on his performance in practice Tuesday. This will be Bryant’s first practice since suffering a high ankle sprain on July 30.

“He has not practiced, so today will go a long way in seeing where he is,” Phillips said. “Let me see how he does in practice and how he looks, and we’ll just go from there. I would like to see him play with the first group if he’s going to play, but overall that wouldn’t happen, so that’s another determining factor.”
