Golden Globes Creates New Lifetime Achievement Honor for TV

The award will be equivalent to the Cecil B. DeMille Award, an accolade for film.

Take a look at some of the key moments in the history of the Golden Globe Awards.

The Golden Globe Awards has created a new lifetime achievement honor to recognize top names in the television industry.

Hollywood Foreign Press Association President Meher Tatna announced the award Thursday morning before nominees for the 76th annual Golden Globes were revealed at the Beverly Hilton. She says the award will be equivalent to the Cecil B. DeMille Award, an accolade for film.

Tatna says the new annual award will "honor TV's biggest names and brightest talents" and was created to reflect what she called a new "golden age of television." She says honorees will be selected based on their accomplishments and influence on the industry.

Who could forget Julia Roberts' 1990 choice for the Golden Globes? The actor accepted a Globe for her role in "Steel Magnolias" in an oversized men's suit, a purple tie and a wide smile.

Coachella wasn't a thing until 1999, but don't tell that to Fran Drescher, who stayed ahead of the flower crown craze with this wild 1996 headpiece.

The Globes is a good place for fashion risks, but some risks just don't pay off. Dame Helen Mirren's 1997 outfit, complete with a double-breasted black coat, a black dress over black boots and a feathered black fascinator, should stay at the back of the closet where it belongs.

Is Kevin Bacon wearing his outsized velvet suit or is his suit wearing him? Either way, the actor's 1997 look is eye-catching for more than one reason.

A far cry from baby doll dresses and Peter Pan collars, this slashed and ripped dress from the 2000 Globes is 100 percent Courtney Love's style.

Anyone missing a ballerina? Lara Flynn Boyle's eye-catching ensemble during the 2003 Golden Globes includes a tank top as her leotard stand-in, a bejeweled tutu and powder pink heels, complete with satin ribbons.

It won't be the last time anyone wears a loud print to the Golden Globes' red carpet, but Helena Bonham Carter's 2011 ensemble, consisting of two different shoes and a dress made with some truly unique draping techniques, might be another thing altogether.

Cameron Diaz's flippy mini-skirt is not usual fare even by the Golden Globes' pared-down standards, which was what made the actress' look so memorable for the 2003 red carpet.

Diane Keaton, actress and style icon, went full-on white in this coat and skirt set during the 2004 Golden Globes awards.

Emma Stone proved gowns are not the only formal wear choice available to women at the 2015 Golden Globes awards. Her sequined top, fitted pipe pants and oversized sash managed to avoid looking ridiculous or overdone.

Sofia Vergara's choice for the 2017 Golden Globes red carpet is remarkable for being a more conservative throwback to Beyonce's barely-there dress for the 2015 Met Gala (which was a more conservative throwback to Rihanna's dress for the 2014 CFDA Awards - you know, that dress).

Evan Rachel Wood wore an impeccable tuxedo to the 2017 Golden Globes as a tribute to legendary rock star and icon David Bowie, close to the one-year anniversary of the day of his death.

Blake Lively's dress for the 2017 Golden Globes came with pockets, which any woman can testify is revolutionary in and of itself. A flattering cut and tasteful accents only accentuate the outfit.

Janelle Monáe's mullet dress and pearl studded beehive updo was a departure from her favored tuxedos and boyish looks, but the actress easily swept the category for Best Dressed at the 2017 Golden Globes awards.

Trace Lysette's green number, with its strong geometrical theme, makes the actress look a little too similar to a Grecian column, but a bold hue and daring cuts made it one of the more memorable looks of the 2017 Golden Globes awards.

No details on who the award would be named after, or who its inaugural recipient will be, were released Thursday. Tatna says the recipient will be revealed in the coming days.

The HFPA has not yet announced its recipient of the DeMille award. Last year the honor went to Oprah Winfrey, who delivered a rousing speech that was a highlight of Hollywood's awards season.
