Telemarketer Profits in SA Police Charity Drive

A San Antonio police union's charity drive is being called into question because the telemarketing firm it uses keeps two-thirds of every dollar donated to the effort.

The "Shop with a Sheriff" campaign in Bexar County serves foster children during Christmas and back-to-school times.

But the San Antonio Express-News reported that the Deputy Sheriff's Association of Bexar County got only one-third of the $105,000 raised by its telemarketing partner, PFR Promotions LLC.

State law requires law enforcement groups to tell prospective donors on the phone how much of their money is going to charity.

Union President Juan Contreras defended the program and said he would make sure the union complied with reporting requirements going forward.
