Tarrant County Honors Veterans in Downtown Parade

Hundreds of people lined the streets in downtown Fort Worth Wednesday morning for the Tarrant County Veterans Day Parade.

Hundreds lined the streets in downtown Fort Worth on Wednesday morning for the Tarrant County Veterans Day parade.

They saw active duty service members, Junior ROTC units and those who served long ago, like Gaylon Jack did during the Korean War.

"It makes you feel patriotic," Jack said of the parade.

Patriotism and appreciation were on full display in the streets of downtown with some seeing their first parade and others like Ruby and Don Bressman of Benbrook who've made this an annual habit.

"We come every year," Ruby said.

She's been bringing the same sign, too, which leads to those on floats recognizing and thanking her.

"Just love America," she said. "Love our vets."

The Bressmans didn't serve themselves, but were there because they say it's important to recognize the sacrifice of those who did and still do.

The Tarrant County Veterans Council's theme this year was Honoring Vietnam Veterans, commemorating the 50th anniversary of the start of the U.S. ground war.

"It's the turn of the Vietnam veterans to have a chance to be appreciated for the work that they've done," said Martin Agee, who helps coordinate the parade for the council.

"We didn't have much support back then during Vietnam, now they do and that's great," said Larry Hays, a Navy and Vietnam veteran who is now apart of the Fleet Reserve Association.

PFC Roberto Martinez Hello, This picture will mean a lot to my son Roberto, since his grandfather (my dad) was just buried on 11/06/2015. He had been away for nearly 5 years and missed spending time with his grandfather. Roberto has been home for only 8 months, so this has been very hard for him. Roberto was enlisted in the US Army, infantry and just wanted to make his family, and children proud.

Box Tops Eagle Scout and Gaga Pits On Monday morning, a new Gaga Pit was dedicated as a new addition to the Crown of Life Lutheran School (COLLS) playground. The Colleyville school was able to purchase this new piece of popular playground equipment through Box Tops for Education. Over a period of three years, students turned in Box Tops worth 10 cents each. The funds received totaling $2,600 (26,000 Box Tops for Education) allowed the school purchase the equipment. Getting the equipment installed was the next step. COLLS was lucky to find Eagle Scout prospect Justin Gneiting, son of COLLS' Coach Molly Gneiting. Justin is a senior at Keller High School and is actively working towards Eagle Scout. In order to achieve the highest rank in the Boy Scouts, members must select a community service project and Justin and chose the Gaga Pit installation as his Eagle Scout project. Box Tops and a prospective Eagle Scout help to make Crown of Life Lutheran School's improved playground a reality.
